Northeast Portland offers an urban lifestyle that is also trending hip. It is home to a large number of restaurants, bars, breweries, and shopping. Some neighborhoods in NE Portland such as Irvington and the Alameda Ridge boosts beautiful and old historic homes and tree-lined streets. Inner Northeast includes many street shopping areas such as the Lloyd District, Alberta Arts District and Hollywood. Also check out North Mississippi Avenue in Boise neighborhood where a countless shops and restaurants exist on the street level. Lloyd District, which is right across the bridge from Pearl District and Chinatown, offers mixed-use and high-density residential living. It is also home to the Rose Quarter (Moda Center) for Portland Trail Blazers. The Blazers’ former home the Memorial Coliseum is now the home to Portland’s hockey team, the Portland Winter Hawks.
Northeast Portland can be divided into inner and central Northeast Portland by the neighborhood boundaries of Grant Park, and Condordia. Much of inner SE Portland has been subject to gentrification and urban development in recent years. It has become an expensive area to live in as developments are cashing in on the attractiveness of many of NE Portland. The gentrification in Portland goes back to World War II when it was used against African Americans who flowed into Portland from the South to take jobs in the shipyards. They were pushed into a neighbor called Lower Albina, near the present-day Rose Quarter. Nowadays, gentrification is not racially motivated but the economic gentrification does have an effect of pushing racially diverse groups of residents including poorer white residents to outer Portland such as East Portland, Central Northeast Portland, and many suburbs.
