Beaverton New High School Boundary Changes Map Comparison
As you have seen on the news, Beaverton School District is changing high school boundary in the fall of 2017 in anticipation of a new high school South Cooper Mountain High School. The boundary map is still being finalized but is very close to being finished. The map above indicates the old boundary map on the left and the new boundary map on the right. The new boundary map may still change a bit but will look very similar to the one above. As you see, there is a new boundary in the southwest of Beaverton in green for South Cooper Mtn. High School and that caused all other boundaries to be reduced and shift upward. The maps also has pinpointed the exact locations of the schools so that if you are purchasing a home in Beaverton, and your kids will be going to high school here, you can see which high school boundary your home is assigned to and where the school is.
The boundary change has caused some issues involving increased commuting time for some students and having to attend an unwanted school in the school district. First, the location of the new high school is very far south on the southern border of Beaverton and if you are in the South Cooper Mtn. District and you live closer to SW Allen Blvd., that’s a long commute. In addition, students will have to change schools. Although the boundary changes will not affect seniors as they will be allowed to remain at their existing high schools, freshmen, sophomores and juniors will change schools or start at the new high school in South Cooper Mountain. Students who have spent at least two years attending their high school made lots of friends and they will have to change school if they are affected by the boundary change. Some schools also perform better than others and reluctance to change school is highly foreseeable among many parents and students.
Will this new boundary change help in a long run? It probably will because having a new high school will reduce class sizes and therefore students have a better chance of quality education. However, it may not help currents students that are perfectly happy at their school having to chance to a new school and go through the process of making friends all over again and get acquainted with their favorite teachers. It’s an added pressure and stress for youngsters.
Will South Cooper Mountain High School be a good school? No one knows at this point. I am sure Beaverton District will work hard to maintain good school qualities for the new school but new schools with new administration will have some glitches so everyone is crossing fingers that this new school will bring positive experience for students who will be attending in the fall.
