Powellhurst-Gilbert is a neighborhood in East Portland bordering South Tabor to the west, Montavilla, Hazelwood, and Mill Park to the north, Lents and Pleasant Valley to the south, and Centennial, and Pleasant Valley to the east. The northern boundary of the neighborhood is SE Division St. and the eastern boundary is SE 142nd Ave. The northern part of the neighborhood stretches west of I-205 bordering SE 82nd Ave. SE Powell Blvd runs directly through the neighborhood. The boundaries, however, are known to be somewhat unclear between this neighborhood, Lents and Pleasant Valley so sometimes they are lumped together by many people referring to the area. Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood has a lot of park spaces including the biggest park Kelly Butte Natural Area featuring nice hiking trails, and picnic areas. One interesting fact about the park is that it has an abandoned Cold War bunker buried underneath it. Other smaller parks in Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood include Ed Benedict Park, Earl Boyles Park, West Powellhurst Park, Raymond City Park, Gilbert Heights City Park, and Gates Park Property. The eastern border is adjacent to Powell Butte Nature Park in Pleasant Valley neighborhood, which is a huge family-friendly natural area with a lot of hiking, biking & equestrian trails with some of the most beautiful scenic views.
This is a very diverse neighborhood with many residents from various culture and ethnic backgrounds. You will see a lot of Asian markets and some of the most authentic restaurants serving Vietnamese food, and Chinese food including dim sum in this neighborhood. You will also see some Russian grocery stores too. In addition to the diversity, you will also have an opportunity to work on your green thumb at Zenger Farm, a non-profit organization with 10 acres of wetlands next to its 6 acre organic farm where you can attend workshops on farming, food preservation or healthy eating on a budget.
Powellhurst-Gilbert is an up-and-coming neighborhood that is mostly residential with more blue-collar feels. The neighborhood is also family-friendly with lots of parks and green space for children. Homes are still affordable in the neighborhood and although it’s got some issues such crime and drug use especially around SE Holgate Blvd, the community is actively involved to solve these issues and improve its quality as a neighborhood.
