The Hollywood District, or just referred to as Hollywood, is a lively neighborhood in Northeast Portland bordering I-84 to the south and NE Thompson St to the north. The neighborhood is located between 37th and 47th Ave from west to east. Sandy Blvd and Broadway St run right through the neighborhood and provides entertainment and easy commuting. This is a small but very walkable neighborhood as the walkability score 80 indicates from the chart below. Sandy and Broadway has lots of shops, restaurants and entertainment. The most known landmark is Hollywood Theatre, which is famous for historic and indie films. Check out Velo Cult Bike Shop on 42nd. It’s a bike repair shop that has beers on tap, and a coffee bar with live music and films. Other neighborhood favorites include Killer Burger, a creative hamburger shop offering bottomless fries, Shandong Chinese restaurant known for unique hand pulled noodles, and Fleur De Lis Bakery & Cafe, a French bakery known for homemade breads & pastries. Hollywood neighborhood also has Whole Foods Market on Sandy and Trader Joe’s on 41st. The Hollywood District is home to the Hollywood Farmers Market, a seasonal farmers’ market from May through November on Hancock between 44th and 45th Ave.
So how did Hollywood neighborhood get its name? The obvious answer is the presence of Hollywood Theater, the neighborhood’s landmark built in 1926 at the end of silent-film era. Prior to the theater, the neighborhood was called Hollyrood after the Scottish capital Holyrood in Edinburgh. After the theater was built, it was such an amazing establishment at the time with 1,500 seats in a luxurious place, the neighborhood was naturally associated with the location and presence of the landmark.
