University Park is a neighborhood in North Portland bordering the Willamette River to the west, Cathedral Park and St. Johns to the northwest, Portsmouth to the northeast, Arbor Lodge to the east, and Overlook to the southeast. University Park is named due to its proximity to Portland University, now named University of Portland in the neighborhood. University of Portland campus is on 71 acres by the Willamette River in this neighborhood with a student body of about 4,000 students.
University Park is not a college town despite its significant portion being used as a university. Students and its non-student residents share services and establishments on N Lombard St, where all the restaurants, shops, bars, coffee shops and other small businesses are located. This neighborhood is rather a very peaceful and nice neighborhood with great views and proximity to the river.
Due to Portland’s recent real estate boom, University Park has been experiencing an influx of new residents as housing prices in inner Portland neighborhoods have shot through the roof. There are lots of first-time home buyers who purchased in University Park. There are lots of older charming homes here in this neighborhood including Victorian and Colonial architectural styles. Homes are all single detached houses here and you won’t see many multi-family unit homes and apartment buildings in University Park despite University of Portland being here. There are, however, a lot of houses for rent to students who attend the university.
University Park has McKenna Park, Portsmouth Park, and also Columbia Park, shared with Portmouth neighborhood. Columbia Park is a very nice park on a 35-acre land offering baseball, softball, soccer fields with tennis courts, volleyball court, horseshoe pit, swimming indoor pool, wading pool, playground, trails and lots of picnic areas.
