Old Town Chinatown

Old Town Chinatown

Old Town Chinatown is the official Chinatown of Portland, Oregon. It is located along Willamette River right northeast of Downtown Portland and east of NW Broadway. Old Town was the original urban core of Portland. It straddles West Burnside St and includes an area under the Burnside Bridge. Attractions in Old Town Chinatown includes Chinatown Gate, Saturday market, the Shanghai tunnels, and Ankeny Plaza. Chinatown offers lots of night entertainment including night clubs, strip clubs, adult theatre, restaurants, food carts, and bars. You will see that this neighborhood does not go to sleep on weekends. For this reason, it has been known a “not so safe neighborhood” to live due to high crimes. You will also see lots of homeless people on the street. There are still some lofts and condos and further you move up north and west, safety will increase dramatically.

The future of Chinatown may be different according to Portland Mayor Charlie Hales and the city’s urban renewal agency in 2014 wanting to revitalize Old Town Chinatown by offering subsidies to build hundreds of new apartments that could rent for as much as $1,563 a month. These development projects will be over the next five years and people are curious of what this area will end up looking like. The area does offer great accessibility to Downtown Portland and Public Transit into SE and NE Portland and holds lots of potential for the future. But that also means the homeless and street people going elsewhere.
