This upscale neighborhood wasn’t always like this.  Prior to mid-1980s, it was an industrial area occupied by warehouses, light industry and railroad classification yards until artists arrived in the neighborhood.  The neighborhood completely transformed to multi-family residential including the construction of the Portland Streetcar over the last couple of decades and now Pearl District mostly consists of high-rise condos and warehouse converted lofts.  As residents grew, so did businesses that serve the people such as restaurants, bars, and ones that satisfy the cultural thirst of its residents.  The most iconic place in Pearl is Powell’s Books.  It is an independently owned new and used bookstores with multiple locations throughout Portland metro area.
