Buckman is a neighborhood in Southeast Portland bordering the Willamette River on the west, Kerns on the north, Hosford Abernathy on the south, and Sunnyside to the east. It is located south of E Burnside St and north of SE Hawthorne Blvd from the river to SE 28th Ave. There are three bridges connected to Buckman neighborhood right into Downtown Portland including E Burnside Bridge, SE Morrison Bridge, and SW Hawthorne Bridge. The neighborhood has Colonel Summers Park, St. Francis Park, and Lone Fir Pioneer Cemetery.
Buckman neighborhood is some of the most happening and hip neighborhoods in Portland. This neighborhood seems to have all the cool hangout spots where people gather on weekends. There are lots of great breweries, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and a variety of independently owned retail stores. Popular breweries in Buckman neighborhood include Cascade Brewing Barrel House, Base Camp Brewing, Hair of the Dog Brewery and Tasting Room, and Lucky Labrador Brewing. These breweries are some of the most well-known ones in Portland. As far as restaurants, there are many amazing restaurants here including Nong’s Khao Man Gai’s brick and mortar restaurant on SE Ankeny St. Also check out Nicholas Restaurant, Le Pigeon, Nostrana, and Olympia Provisions which is a hybrid of meat shop and restaurant famous for its charcuteries, eggs Benedict, and Bloody Mary. The famous funky Hawthorne District is also in Buckman where you will see some of the most unique shops and people. This is where Portlandia happens. The funkiness stretches over to Sunnyside neighborhood nextdoor. Despite being hip and funky, homes here look more traditional including craftsman and English Victorian homes. There are no high rise condos or modern feels in this neighborhood though it’s very urban. You will feel more laid-back vibe in this neighborhood. Belmont District also offers lots of shops, boutiques, coffee shops and more.
Buckman has a lot of younger Portland residents. Although it’s more urban and commercial, there are children that live here evidenced by Buckman Arts Magnet Elementary School, a highly regarded public school for students interested in arts. There is also Buckman Elementary School.
