Montavilla is a neighborhood in Southeast Portland at the northeastern corner of SE Portland bordering Hazelwood neighborhood in East Portland. Montavilla borders North Tabor, and Mt. Tabor to the west, Madison South to the north, Hazelwood to the east, and South Tabor and Powellhurst Gilbert to the south. Montavilla is located in the corner of I-84 and I-205 junction and it’s southern border is SE Division St. It stretches from NE 68th Ave to I-205 in the northern portion and from SE 76th Ave to I-205 in the southern portion of the neighborhood.
The name “Montavilla” originated from its original name Mount Tabor Village in 1890s, which was a stopping point for traverlers going from Hoold River into Portland. Montavilla has undergoing some serious revitalization in the past several years. This neighborhood is now desirable and trendy with a strong presence of the neighborhood association. There are many popular dining options including The Country Cat and The Observatory on SE Stark St. just west of SE 82nd Ave. The neighborhood’s determination to improve the neighborhood has been really paying off in recent years and home values in Montavilla have increased significantly. Schools in Montavilla are improving too. Families have access to Montavilla Park and Berrydale Park with picnic areas and softball fields. There is also a community garden called Berrydale Community Garden. Montavilla is also very close to Mt. Tabor Park especially if you are closer to the western border so there are lots of spaces here for children.
Montavilla neighborhood’s housing prices are still affordable compared to other SE Portland neighborhoods. There have been many millennials and first-time home buyers buying in Montavilla neighborhood due to its relative affordability and lifestyle. You can find nice pockets of residential areas here with nice homes on a well-maintained tree-lined street. Neighborhood quality in Montavilla tends to vary depending on where you are due to the big size of the neighborhood, which stretches all the way to I-205 so you will definitely want to look around and find the area and home prices that work for you. It has been up-and-coming since around 2010 and significant progress has been made as of today.
